What breed of dogs are good with small children?

hi,
we have a lab who is great with our 3 year old. I would like to know what other breeds have you had experience with them being around small children? What are the worst breeds to have around children? How do you introduce a dog to a small infant or small child? How do you teach your children to respond to animals in public, like a petstore?

I have always heard that German Shepherds and Pitbulls are the worst dogs to have around children. I'm not sure if that's exactly true, just what my parents always told me. As for the best dogs, I think that dachshunds are good with kids if you want something a bit small.

I have a dog now that is part Lab and he is very great with the children. I also had a Keeshound and that was the best dog around kids that I have ever had. Very loving dog all around.

We have a lab mix and he is very good with the kids. I have heard not to put kids with pit bulls. But in general if you treat your dog badly or make it mean it shouldn't be around kids.

The answer is simple: None of them and all of them. It depends entirely on how the child and the dog were raised. Raised by people who tease and mistreat, any dog can be vicious. Raised in a loving home any dog can be a wonderful friend to a child. We've had everything from tiny to huge. No one has ever been attacked. But then we also raised the children to not mistreat their furry siblings!

I agree, it does depend on the dog. Of course any dog has the ability to attack a child. I guess they're more like humans  than some people think.

I think my dad is just paranoid about German Shepherds because he was bitten by two different ones when he was a child.

I would have to say a LAB, totally , they are the very best,I know with kids, cats, other animals.

All of my dogs were raised around children, cats and other animals. We once "misplaced" a gerbil that was the class pet to my oldest (Her weekend to babysit). We found it curled up with the cat sleeping ON the dog (A Rottie). I swear that dog just grinned at me when I found them!

I would definitely say miniature schnauzers, they aren't big and they are so loveable.  I got my first schnauzer when I was 7 and my brother was only 1 year old.

I love the mini schnauzer. My good friend/neighbor has one and I have babysat him many times, and he is always a gentleman. Very good with my older kids, loves to run.
