I've seen pictures of this so i tried it with my lab. She can actually walk on a treadmill. Why do people do this to dogs? Is it necessary for weight loss or do they do it to keep the dog in shape. After a while of about 5 minutes, she gets bores and jumps off. Please share your thoughts and thanks for the info.

I suppose that it's for exercise reasons, or maybe for the entertainment value? I really don't know, as I have never tried it. I can imagine that the dog would get bored with it pretty soon.

People without ample room for a large dog to run shouldn't get them. My pomeranian can make a track out of the living room. An Irish Setter could not. I use a treadmill for exercise when the weather is bad....Urs will sometimes jump on it with me for a few minutes....more like she is trying to fogure out WHY I'm doing it.....

I just cannot see my dog walking on a treadmill. She would probably jump off or try to sit. I guess maybe they use them with dogs to help them lose weight?

I would never do this to my dog. Good grief, get a leash and take them for a walk. It will be good for the both of you.

I don't think that I would try it out. It seems so much easier to just take the dog for a walk. I think that owning a dog is a responsibility that should not be taken lightly, and if you are serious about getting a dog, take it out for the exercise it deserves.

I really can not believe that people have gotten so lazy. I agree with janus, if you can't take the time to walk your dog, then why do you have them.

The other side is that a friend of mine has a Jack Russell and he loves to get on the thing with her. They have TONS of energy and love anything to do with running. She uses it for herself and he just jumped on one day and ran along with her. He finds it fun. I think many people do it because the dog LIKES it...not because they are lazy.

While I think that taking a dog out is the best way to exercise it, I don't think it's fair to say that a person who uses a treadmill on their dog is lazy. If the dog isn't be harmed by it, why is it such a big deal? I say, if that's what works for you, do it. Some people don't let their dog have any exercise.

Sometimes circumstances are such where the dog has to use a treadmill for some sort of endurance or running training.  People who have greyhounds that race sometimes use treadmills with the dogs and so do those who train dogs for illegal fights.

We have tons of snow here, and I have a really fat dog, so the treadmill works!
