How to Groom Your Dogs
September 4th, 2007 at 02:45pm Under Dog Grooming
For those of you who own cats, you know how impeccable they are and how they like keeping themselves clean. Our dogs, on the other hand, don’t sit and groom themselves. They care less about how they look and i suspect their more happier rolling around in mud and dirt.
You and I know that they don’t smell too good and we wouldn’t want their smell on our sofas and bales of shed dog hair on the carpet!
Thats’ why we have to groom our dogs and keep their coats healthy and shiny looking. To different degrees, all dogs require grooming.
Different dogs require different dog grooming instructions.
For example, long haired dogs require combing and brushing 2 or 3 times a week. Dogs with thick undercoats should have the dead hair combed out weekly. This causes the shedding process to be accelerated thus avoiding having hair on your carpet and sofa. For dogs with short hair, they still need to be brushed and rubbed to keep their coats healthy and shiny.
For you to groom your dog properly, you need to use the correct technique and have the proper dog grooming supplies for the job. For soft silky coated dogs, a fine-toothed comb is good enough to do the job and you use it to rake off fleas from its coat. The shedding comb offers a “skip-tooth” design. The long teeth pull dead hair from the undercoat while the short teeth collect loose hair. This comb is also very good at removing matted hair.
The undercoat works very well with dogs that have thick coats. The teeth of the comb are thick which works well especially for breeds with thick, heavy coats and undercoats. The teeth are thick, allowing the rake to attack the undercoat while being pulled gently through the dog’s hair.
Even though bathing your dog is essential for his hygiene, you should not overdo it. Most veterinarians suggest bathing your dog no more than once a month. If you bathe your dog more than once a month, use an aloe based shampoo and conditioner and also feed the dog with Omega fatty acids so that the dog will be able to increase the production of coat oils.
Please examine your dog on a daily basis in order to maintain the overall good health of the dog. Check for cuts, rashes, ticks, bumps or burrs. If you find them please remove them and use appropriate antibiotics or medication. Daily examinations are a valuable tool in maintaining an overall good dog picture and good health for all list of dog breeds. Flea allergies and contact allergies can cause skin eruptions and should be treated immediately.
Good dog skin and coat start with good nutrition. A good grade dry dog food or even nutritious homemade dog food usually provides all the nutrition and essential dietary elements necessary to keep your dog in good health. If you see that the coat of your dog appears to be itchy or dull, I’d recommend you change the diet. In most cases, vitamin or fatty acid supplements will sort out the problem.
Our pets offer us endless devotion and love and they ask little from us in return.. The lease we can do is keep them well groomed and healthy.
