Dog Grooming Supplies & Products Guide
There are many different dog grooming supplies and products available in the market. Grooming your dog accomplishes more than just making it have a shiny coat. It allows you to spend quality time with your dog and interact with it strengthening the bond between the two of you. Most people complain that they usually have a hard time grooming their dogs because the animal either yelps all the time or is restless. Most dogs behave like small children and once they realise that they can get away with their antics, they will continously nag you!
The best approach is to gently handle the dog and issue strong commands which will train him to behave. Also, learn to praise the dog for good behavior and don't let the dog off the hook when it behaves badly. Before reviewing dog grooming supplies and dog grooming products lets look at important dog bathing tips.
Now, before bathing your dog, check for foreign obects which might be stuck on its coat. Below are some common objects found on the dog coat and how to remove them.
- Chewing Gum- Don't be tempted to scissor off the chunk of fur surrounding the gum. Instead place ice cubes on the gum to freeze it then break it off into pieces.
- Paint:- Water soluble paints can easily be removed by using warm water
- Skunk spray:- Use a mixture of hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and laundry soap.
After cleaning out all the foreign object its time to bathe the dog. Most dogs can be cleaned in the household tub.
Use a shower nozzle to gently run warm water all over the dog. Once soaked, gently apply dog shampoo and spread it generously all over the coat of the dog from the head to the tail creating a good later taking care to avoid the eyes, inside of the ears and nose. Once you have a good lather take the hose again and genly run off the shampoo starting from the neck moving down to the tail. After clearing off all the shampoo use a dry towel to moap up any excessive water on the coat.
Dog grooming is essential for the overall well being of the dog. Brush the coat regularly to keep it clean and shiny. It is advisable to brush and comb your dog several times a week.This applies to long coated and short coated dogs.
Dog grooming products and supplies that one uses include:
- Combs
:- Use a comb suitable for the dog's coat. Use a fine-toothed comb for dogs with soft, silky hair and a rubber mitt or coarse washcloth for short coat. Use de-matting combs to remove mats.
- Shampoo
:- These clean and soften the dog's coat. Please note that frequent bathing of dogs can cause the natural oils in the skin to dry which can cause bacterial infections in the long run. Aloe-based shampoos and coat conditioners help maintain coat oils and skin health.
- Nail
Trimmers
:- Never attempt to use normal scissors to trim your dog's nails. Use trimmers specifically designed for dogs. A good time to trim dog's nails is right after bathing it.
Dental hygiene is also important for your dog. Most people don't know how to go about this and usually take their dogs to the vet or don't even bother checking the dog's teeth. You can save thousands of dollars in vet fees if you decide to learn how to do it while the dog is still a puppy. Otherwise when the dog is fully grown you will have a hard time.
