Personalized Dog Collars, Electric & Training Collars

Collars are pieces of material placed round the neck of a dog for the purposes of identification and control. There are many types of collars to choose from:- Breed-specific collars, reflective dog collars, studded collars, personalized dog collars, electric collars among others. The internet has made it easy for most of us to research before commiting ourselves to buying.

Dog collars come in different designs (slip, metal, buckle) and textures (cotton, leather or nylon). When buying a collar remember that the weight and width of the collar should be propotional to the size of the dog.

A quick way of knowing the appropriate length required for your dog collar is to measure your dog's neck a few inches down from his head, then add about an inch for small dogs or 2 inches for medium and large dogs. If you have a short coated dog, then the best option to buy a broad flat leather or woven nylon collar with a sturdy metal buckle.

I'm sure at one time or another you might have experienced problems with your dog due to its bad behaviour. Bad habits include:

• Jumping on other people
• Destructive chewing
• Not responding when called
• Unwanted barking etc..

There are many different choices of dog training collars available in the market which you can use to train your dog. We have the chain choke or slip collars which works with a leash. They have been made in such a way that when the leash is pulled, the dog collar tightens restraining the dog. Do this when the dog misbehaves which will make it feel uncomfortable and thereby help in correcting its mistakes.

We also have shock or electric collars. These collars are also known as remote controlled collars. Remote collar have major applications is for training. One common use is to stop dogs from barking unneccessarily. The collars are activated when the collar senses the vibration of the dog's vocal cords. They have been tested thoroughly and are safe, effective and humane to the pet. If you have no experience using electric collars then its advisable to buy instruction videos with your purchase.

The advantage of electric collars is that the owner does not have to tie a leash to the dog to use it. The electric signals can be activated from distances of 250 yards up to 2 miles. Most of the collars being sold are either fully rechargeable (transmitter + receiver) or use a combination of a rechargeable receiver (the collar) and the transmitter uses a replaceable battery.

Prong collars are made from a series of chain links with the ends turned facing the neck of the dog so that when its tightened, it pinches the skin around the dog's neck which startles the dog and gives a sharp correction. Most people argue that inflicting pain is not the corrct way to train a dog in the long run.

Personalized dog collars are also popular. With this type of collars the name of the dog is printed on the collar. If you decide to buy a personalized dog collar go for one with an adjustable snap collar, adjustable buckle collar or the standard buckle collar with reinforced holes on it.

Remember, dogs have a habit of chewing collars. Nylon dog collars are considered to be the best because they are not only sturdy and inexpensive but come in a wide array of eye catching colors and patterns.
