Alternative Name Dobermann, Doberman Pinscher, Dobbie Origin Germany Physical Attributes The animal is about 25-29 inches tall at the shoulders and weighs around 60 to 88 pounds. It has long legs and the coat is either black, rust or brown. Health Information Dobermans have a lifespan of about 12 years Miscellaneous Information Originally bred in Germany in the 1890's by Louis Dobermann, a tax collector and dog breeder. The Doberman is a decendent of the wolf. It was bred from Pinscher (terrier), Thuringian Shepherd, Rottweiler, Great Dane, Greyhound, and the German Shorthaired Pointer. The exact ratios of gene pools are unknown but it's widely believed that the German Shepherd gene pool was the single largest contributor to the Dobermann breed. The dogs are said to be extremely loyal and are used as guard dogs or police dogs. The dog is born with a tail longer than most dog but undergoes a process called docking where a majority of the tail is cut a few days after birth. Ear cropping is usually done between 7 and 9 weeks after birth. The process involves cutting off part of the animal's ears and then propping them up with posts or cups and tape bandages, which allows the cartilage to develop into an upright position as the puppy grows. Most Dobermann owners are opting not to have the ears cropped as the process is considered to be painful to the animal Found the above information useful?
