Physical Attributes
The dog is characterized by a dense coat which is either smooth or rough. The color of the coat comes in various shades including reddish-brown , blue, black, cream or white.
The dogs have a broad chest, small ears which are rounded and a broad thick skull. They also have a blue-black tongue.
Health Information
Prone to hip dysplasia. They are known to suffer from entropion, a form of eye irritation caused by eyelid abnormality. The life expectancy of Chow Chows is about 15 years.
Miscellaneous Information
Outwardly, the Chow worthily embodies the kind, faithful heart and the brave spirit within. His compact body (weighing 40 lbs. or more), with the beautiful fur coat and ruff, the plume tail turned over on his back and almost meeting his neck-ruff, the strong, straight legs and neat, catlike feet, gives an impression of symmetry, power, and alertness. His handsome face wears a "scowl." This is the technical term for the "no nonsense" look which deters strangers from undue familiarity, though to friends his expression is kindness itself.
Chow Chows are know to be difficult to train and are bossy and independent creatures. They are naturally stubborn and the owner of these dogs should be firm and very patient with them if he/she wants to train them properly.
Chow Chows need to be socialized from a very young age to curb their over-protective nature as adults. Chow Chows were originally bred as working dog for hunting, herding and protection.
